Mode of Action
Chlorpyrifos is a non-systemic acetylcholinesterase inhibitor that is effective against mites and nematodes.
It affects the insect by direct contact, ingestion via treated plant or inhalation of its fumes.
It acts by affecting the normal functioning of an insects nervous system by inhibiting the breakdown of Acetylcholine(Ach) neurotransmitter.
Chlorpyrifos binds to the acetylcholinesterase enzyme (AChE), which is key in the breakdown of the acetylcholine neurotransmitter and in regulating nerve signal transfer.
This results in the accumulation of Ach in the nerve cells leading to an overstimulation/overexcitement of nerve signals i.e.: neurotoxicity Insect ends up having seizures/paralysis and eventually dies.
